Why Yoga for Children?
Countless scientific studies show how yoga tools can improve the practitioner’s concentration, behavior, focus and creativity. Brain research suggests that children develop cognitive, social and emotional skills through movement.
YOGA TEACHES TOOLS FOR LIFELONG WELLNESS!
The medical profession has determined that self- awareness, self-management and self-care are key contributors to a lifetime of health and wellness. Yoga for children teaches those tools. A children’s yoga class meets the holistic needs of the child: physical, intellectual, social and emotional. Plain and simple, yoga is good exercise that helps strengthen muscle tone and improve flexibility. Additionally, yoga is shown to positively impact ADD/ADHD, anxiety, sleep-disorders, asthma and diabetes.
GOOD HEALTH PAVES THE WAY FOR ACADEMIC SUCCESS!
Numerous studies have shown that students’ health strongly impacts their ability to succeed in school and success in the classroom is only achieved through the education of the whole child. Yoga is a unique form of “exercise,” in that the emphasis is on the connection between body, mind and spirit. With yoga tools, students and teachers alike can learn to shift their mind-body states to support their emotional and physical well-being.
LET’S CONCENTRATE AND FOCUS BETTER!
Yoga tools increase the child’s ability to concentrate and focus, which positively impacts the child’s performance in the classroom. Yoga can also help manage the symptoms of ADHD and anxiety. Additionally, in children’s Yoga classes, the child learns tools to process and handle difficult emotions, which impacts their entire lives. The medical profession has determined that self awareness and self-care are two key contributors to a lifetime of health and wellness.
IT’S NICE NOT TO HAVE TO COMPETE DURING YOGA!
A premium value in yoga, is bringing awareness to the present moment, and showing compassion for yourself and others. The person on the mat today, will not be the same one who shows up tomorrow. In a children’s yoga class, emphasis is placed on non-competitiveness and supporting one’s friends in cooperation based activities. This is a welcome respite from the competitive world we live in. Most physical activities that children participate in today are competition based. In Yoga we learn not to compare ourselves to others, and to be “wherever we are at.”
WE ALL LEARN DIFFERENTLY!
Shalom Kids Yoga classes address multiple intelligences, incorporating music, literacy, creative movement, and storytelling, allowing the needs of all learners to be addressed.
THIS WORLD IS STRESSFUL!
In every yoga series that I have ever taught, when I ask kids what their favorite part of yoga, they almost unanimously answer “relaxation!” Can we blame them? Yoga is a proven method to effectively reduce stress. Giving children the gift of yoga at a young age, provides them with a healthy living tool they can use for the rest of their lives.
